Shaft-Driven Kawasaki KZ1100 Police Bike
Check out one of our favorite customer's one-of-a-kind, custom Kawasaki KZ1100 Police bike.
Larry is a longtime collector of Kawasaki law enforcement bikes and doesn't do anything halfway.
As far as we know, this is the world's only shaft-driven Kawi Police bike. To the casual tire-kicker,
it looks like a former police bike, but closer inspection reveals a robust frame that Larry beefed up from
a 1981 KZ 1100 Police bike an lots of other goodies inside! Read on...
The police bike frames are highly braced
and gusseted to carry the weight at pursuit speeds. Every brace and gusset was removed with a plasma cutter
along with every bracket that mounted police specific hardware, saddlebags, floorboards, heel/toe shifter,
fairing mounts, crash bar, seat, radio tray, exhaust hangers. Each piece was then ground and fitted,
then TIG welded in place. The frame was then powder coated along with the wheels.
The engine is a '82 kz 1100.
The crankshaft was welded for reliability, it's a pressed together crank, and sometimes they twist under hard use.
It was bored to 1135 cc with 10 to 1 MTC pistons. The cylinder head and cams are from an '83 GPZ 1100. The
engine was assembled by Skippy Duke in Richmond Va. Since the purpose of all this was a bike capable of long days
on the road. He wanted to slow the engine speed a bit but there are no optional gear ratios. So, he mounted the rear
wheel from a '79 ST1000. The ST wheel is a 17 inch as opposed to the 16 that comes on the KZ1100. This was
accomplished with only a minor modification to the rear brake caliper and dropped engine speed at 70 MPH
from 4500 RPM to about 4000. The front end is directly off a police bike. The paint was done by "Paint by Stacy".
